Sept. 22-24, 2017
Want to get away for a weekend of fast-paced whitewater action followed by relaxing evenings under the clear, West Virginia skies, AND a full-blown, 3 hour BJJ seminar all rolled into one?! Well, this is it!
Come and have the time of your life rafting the WORLD-CLASS whitewater of the Gauley River, not once…but TWICE in one weekend! We are jamming a ton of good stuff into this package to make for one of the biggest bang-for-the-buck getaways you could ever possibly have!
*NOTE* – This camp is rated AE (Adults Extreme – 18 yrs. and over) due to Extreme Action, Extreme Sports, and Extreme Adrenaline…it is not for the squeamish or faint of heart. 🙂
Let’s get straight to the details…this is a two-night, three-day “Quick-Escape” to the New River Gorge near Fayetteville, West Virginia. Check-in begins at 4:00 pm On Friday September 22th, and check out is Sunday, September 24th at 10:00 am.
To find out all about what you are getting yourself into, read on below:
The Beautiful New River gorge! September is possibly the BEST time to come and visit this natural wonder often called the “Grand Canyon” of the east. With the trees beginning to change color the 70,000 square acre National park becomes a visual masterpiece and a relaxing haven away from the noise, heat and rat-race of the city!
The longest and deepest gorge in the Appalachian mountains, the New River gorge is not only one of the top whitewater rafting spots in the world, but also home to crystal clear skies, quiet solitude, and a view of the night-sky’s constellations unlike any you have ever seen.
We will be bunking down in modern, clean “Bunk-Style” cabins. both Friday and Saturday nights. Each cabin has 4 bunks (8-people) and has electricity, ceiling fans and a covered porch. You will be sharing your cabin with 7 like-minded, adventure seeking Jiu-Jiteros just like yourself.
You will need to bring your sleeping bag and a pillow for the bunks as linens are not included. The cabins are really nice as bunks go, but they are not “luxurious”. We have some other camps for that sort of vacation and please feel free to check them out HERE, but this is a true “adventure” camp, and adventure is the focus!
This is what it is ALL about. The Gauley River is possibly the single best whitewater-rafting experience in the entire United States! With rapids running the gamut from class I – class V, you will have two days of whitewater rafting to rival any in the world! If you have ever thought about your “bucket-list”, well, this is one to fill it!
With class V rapids with names like “Pure Screaming Hell”, you get a pretty good idea of the sort of adventure that awaits!
The dates of this camp have been specially planned around the US Army Corp of Engineers scheduled dam openings / water releases into the Gauley River basin. This annual release lasts for several hours each day and releases a MASSIVE 2800 cubic feet “per second” (you read that right! PER SECOND!) of water into the river! There is no need to wonder…”Will there be good water levels” on this trip!
On the first day of rafting, we will set into the Lower Gauley river for a day full of class III and IV rapids with a final run through the class V rapid “Pure Screaming Hell”…just to give us a taste of what we can expect on day two.
Day two brings us to the top of the Upper Gauley River! This is it! Many rafters consider the Upper Gauley the “End All” of white water in the U.S.! And we are gonna run it!
In your boat, with 7 of the fellow Jiu-Jiteros you just met two nights before (or maybe with your own crew), you are going to charge face first into one of the most aggressive Class V Whitewater rivers in the world!
The Upper Gauley has no less than “FIVE class V” rapids that will get your pulse up and your lungs pumping! Don’t worry though….the trip should only take four to six hours!
While food is not the focus of this adventure, we thought we would throw some in for good measure…you’re gonna need to fuel up between raftings!
Friday night, we will have an old-fashioned “Hot Dog Roast” around the campfire just outside of our cabins. We will be supplying the hot dogs, buns, chips, non-alcoholic beverages (feel free to bring a cooler of whatever drinks you would like), and sides to make up your “Last Supper”, as it were…before taking the plunge the following morning.
In the morning a light, continental style breakfast is on the menu with, breads, fruit jams, bagels and fruit to get you a bit of last minute energy while also keeping your stomach light for the six ours of high adrenaline adventure coming up!
Each day during our raft trips we will stop at a scenic spot along the river where our guides will grill us up a delicious, fresh “shore lunch” before finishing up the second half of the day’s rafting.
Back at camp, on Saturday evening, we will be heading to the nearby Mountain Resort for a dinner among our new-found comrades-in-oars at one of a choice of restaurants including “Chetty’s Pub” (pub fare),”Smokey’s on the Gorge” (gourmet buffet with a killer gorge-side view – oh and “all-you-can-eat”…just sayin’), and “Buffler’s BBQ” (Picnic-style BBQ). (Saturday night’s dinner is “on your own” and cost is not included in the registration fee. You can opt to stay around the cabins and grill up some food over the fire. We will have extra charcoal just for that and you can bring coolers of whatever you want!).
It is always an option to head to the “Rendezvous Lounge” for some live music and draft beers
after dinner, otherwise, you can head back to the cabin to sit around the fire or hit the bunk early….remember, we’ve got our biggest day of rafting yet to come!
When I conceived of this camp, I immediately thought of one Professor in particular to head up our seminar. A native of West Virginia himself and now living not too far away, in Columbus Ohio, Professor Dustin Ware has been a “ROCK” in the mid-west Jiu-Jitsu scene since the mid- 1990’s.
Professor Ware runs one of the most successful BJJ gyms in the mid-west as well as the tremendously successful American Grappling Challenge (AGC): the largest, longest-running independent tournament series in the mid-west, and possibly east of the Mississippi!
Professor Ware has graciously agreed to run our Friday evening seminar which will be held at the nearby “Lookout Lodge” conference center from 5 pm – 8 pm on Friday evening. (we had originally planned on holding the seminar Sunday evening, after our last day of rafting. After counsel from experienced rafters, we realized we had better hold the seminar before our two days of rafting the most aggressive Class V river in the country 🙂 )
